Blackie the Cat (2003-2020) was the longtime creative collaborator and feline companion of artist Gary Baseman. Known for his “Power of Purr” and “Gift of Gab”, Blackie the Cat was the inspiration for Baseman’s iconic characters ChouChou and Ahwroo. He co-created The Purr Room in 2019, a sound bath installation that features Blackie’s triple purr, shared with thousands in the USA, UK, and China since. His message of peace and compassion continues to this day to be an important part of Gary Baseman’s art.

Gary Baseman (born 1960) is a Los Angeles-based multi-Emmy and BAFTA award-winning artist whose interdisciplinary work explores the human condition through fine art, illustration, performance, film, fashion, and toy design. Known for his raw style and humor, his art has appeared in international publications, games, and toys (Cranium), and in the animated ABC/Disney series and feature film Teacher’s Pet, for which he was creator and executive producer. His work has been displayed in art spaces and museums around the globe.
