Night Market: The Exchange of Dreams spotlights trailblazing Asian Pacific Islander creatives. As industry leaders, these creatives empower and promote greater visibility for the API community in New York and Los Angeles.

This publication was born from a meditation on the index as a non-hierarchical listing and record of information. At Civil Art, we strive to create egalitarian platforms that highlight a diverse range of emerging to established creative voices. This publication is a testament to that goal and a reflection of our belief in the transformative potential of collective storytelling.

Night Market: The Exchange of Dreams showcases the efforts of individuals and collectives in fine art, culinary art, design, and scholarship who fight against social norms and inspire younger generations. The features highlight each subject’s artifact—their artwork and creative process—and the personal and cultural histories that inform their diverse practices. Each feature also covers the day-in-life of each creative, offering a personable account of their daily rituals and inspirations. Recognizing the inspiring power of personal narratives for future generations, Night Market: The Exchange of Dreams indexes the life stories and passions of these API creatives. From the visual arts to gastronomy or design to scholarship, each one has a unique story about embracing their dreams and finding their identity in America.

Night Market was the umbrella program of Civil Art’s Summer 2024 initiative in collaboration with Christie’s Corporate Social Responsibility. Taking the rich diversity of marketplaces as a central theme, Night Market underscored the importance of community and inclusivity in New York City. Night Market comprised a charitable auction, public events, and educational programming at Christie’s New York in the Rockefeller Center.

Civil Art empowers the Asian Pacific Islander community by making the contributions of the API creatives accessible to a wider demographic through educational programming, editorial platforms, community gatherings, and other events. Civil Art’s public programming highlights the ways in which the contributions of API creatives communicate cultural narratives, including employing themes that speak to its multiplicity. Our programming raises awareness of the community’s diverse histories while fostering opportunities for intra-community connection, understanding, and further creative development.
