Over the past four decades, Wayne White has left a mind-boggling stamp on contemporary pop and visual culture across a range of genres and media—from his Emmy-award-winning set designs and puppetry for Pee-Wee’s Playhouse in the mid-80s, to his much-lauded animated music videos for Peter Gabriel, The Smashing Pumpkins, and others, to his wildly successful mock-Fine Art “word paintings”, and the immersive dioramas and installation pieces he’s created for museums and the gargantuan puppets created for cultural institutions and philharmonics, White has brought an unrelenting energy, invention and wizardry to seemingly everything he’s touched.
But even given all that, it may be in the area of simple, improvisational drawing that White’s true graphic mastery and visual virtuosity is most clearly revealed.
This volume brings together 72 of White’s drawings, from quick doodles on Post-It notes, to private notebooks, to large scale museum pieces.
